Since 2009, St. Louis Women in Media has been dedicated to the education and advancement of local, female professionals and hobbyists in the communications field. In an effort to better fulfill that mission and serve the women of St. Louis, we have decided to make a few changes in the structure of our organization.

No more membership fees! We want to open up the group to a larger, more informal membership. This means there will no longer be a formal membership application or dues. Current members will be issued refunds based on the number of quarterly events held since they signed up.

Open LinkedIn Group! You will still have to be approved for membership – after all, we want to make sure the group members are local media professionals and hobbyists, not spammers! – but the group, which had previously been open only to dues-paying members, will be an open and public forum to discuss issues at hand for media professionals in St. Louis, and beyond.

We will still remain a non-profit organization, and an advisory board will remain in place. While the board works on making these changes, we have suspended all events – including the conference that was scheduled for May 18, 2012.

In the meantime, we want to keep the discussion going on social media and encourage you to connect with us on Facebook, Twitter and, of course, our now public LinkedIn Group.

We thank you for your continued support as we implement these changes. We are confident that this will allow us to better serve the female community of media professionals in St. Louis.

If you have any questions regarding the changes, please email us at info@stlouiswomeninmedia.com.

Steps to Planning the Perfect Happy Hour

Create Facebook invite.

Invite people you know and post to your Facebook and Twitter accounts.

Watch the RSVPs roll in, like moths to a flame.

Okay, maybe it isn’t that simple.

It helps when you have a stellar venue to work with, like we had with Robust Wine Bar. Owners Stanley and Arlene were extremely cooperative – getting us a reserved section in the restaurant, extending their happy hour specials, designating a pair of waiters for our group, and I even spotted them taking some pictures of the event!

It also helps when you have a group of women as motivated and supportive as the ladies in St. Louis. Each event we’ve had – big, small, formal or informal – the women of St. Louis have come out in droves. It’s been an amazing privilege to meet and mingle with the women at these events – bloggers, photographers; women who work in print, TV, radio and on the web; even the PR, marketing and advertising crowd.

You can check out some photos from the event by heading over to Robust’s Facebook album!

Thanks again for another great happy hour! Until next time…

During our “Freelancing” panel there was a lot of talk about asserting yourself as an expert in your field, and basically getting other people to talk about you. To get you started on getting yourself out there, we wanted to share two really great resources that will get you linked up with the very people who are looking for you.

Help A Reporter Out (HARO): This massive compendium is growing in popularity. Reporters submit queries for items they need sources on, and potential sources (that means any and all of us) sign-up for daily emails in subject areas related to their field of expertise or their products. The site allows you to register for the daily source query emails, and send a query yourself matching the date your query is sent with your deadline. When there is a match, it is one made in sourcing heaven.

Bill & Steve Harrison’s Reporter Connection: This sourcing site sends out one email a day with queries that need to be answered.
